Our approach
Happy Hour HQ is a free public directory of happy-hour deals at bars and restaurants in New Jersey. We collect the minimum data needed to run the directory and we don't sell, share, or trade your information with third parties.
What we collect
Account data (managers + advertisers only). Email address, password (hashed), and any details you add to your account profile. We use this to authenticate you and contact you about your bar listing or advertising account.
Bar listing data (anyone). Any bar information you submit through the public submission form — bar name, town, photo, website link, deal details. Submitted listings are reviewed by admins before going public.
Pageview counts (anyone visiting a bar page). We log a single row per page-load with the bar ID and timestamp — no IP address, no session ID, no user agent, no referrer. This gives bar managers a traction signal ("how many people viewed my listing this week") without tracking individuals.
Approximate location from your IP (anyone visiting the public site). Our host (Vercel) attaches a coarse city, region, and approximate coordinates to each request. We only trust that signal when the region is New Jersey. We use it to show relevant local ads and to roll daily impression counts up by city / county / region for advertisers. We do not store your IP address on those daily totals, and we do not use this to identify you. Out-of-state visitors are treated as location-unknown.
Browser location (anyone who taps "Find Me" / "near me" and allows it). Your precise latitude/longitude stays in the browser. It is never transmitted to our servers. After you allow access, we map the pin to the nearest loaded New Jersey bar and send only that town, county, and region (not coordinates) so we can show matching ads and sort bars by distance on your device.
What we don't collect
- We don't run third-party analytics (no Google Analytics, no Facebook Pixel, no Hotjar). We do use Vercel Speed Insights (first-party performance metrics from our host — not an advertising or cross-site tracker).
- We don't run third-party ads or remarketing.
- We don't sell or share data with marketers.
- We don't fingerprint your browser.
- We don't load tracking scripts from social networks.
Third-party processors
To run the site we share narrow slices of data with infrastructure providers. Each only sees what they need to do their job; none receive your data for their own marketing.
- Supabase (database, auth, file storage). Stores account email + hashed password + bar listing data + uploaded photos. US-hosted.
- Vercel (web hosting + CDN + Speed Insights). Sees request logs (URL, response code, anonymized IP) which are auto-pruned per Vercel's policy. Speed Insights collects aggregated Real User Monitoring (page performance) for this site only.
- Stripe (payments — advertisers only). When you subscribe to an advertiser plan, Stripe processes your card directly; we receive only a customer ID + subscription status. Your card number never touches our servers. Stripe's own privacy notice governs that data.
- Resend (transactional email). When we email you a magic-link sign-in, an account notification, or an advertiser receipt, Resend handles delivery. They see your email address + the message body for the period needed to send + log delivery.
- Anthropic Claude API (AI-assisted listing extraction). When admins or scrapers run a bar's website or pasted text through our intake pipeline, the extracted text is sent to Anthropic for parsing into structured listing data. Anthropic does not train on API content by default. We don't send any user account data to Claude.
We do not use any of these providers to track you across the internet, build advertising profiles, or otherwise look at your behavior.
Cookies
We use first-party cookies for essential authentication (keeping you signed in) and one first-party cookie (hhq_ad_seen) that remembers how many times this browser has already seen a given sponsored listing today, so we can stop repeating the same ad. These are required for the site to function as designed. No third-party advertising or analytics cookies.
We also use localStorage to remember your theme preference (light/dark) and font-size preference. These never leave your browser.
How long we keep data
- Account data: until you delete your account or request removal.
- Bar listing data: indefinitely (it's the directory).
- Pageview rows: rolled into daily aggregates and pruned after 90 days (TBD — see retention policy on the open items list).
- Audit logs of admin actions: indefinitely for accountability; reviewed annually.
Your rights
You can request a copy of your account data, ask us to delete it, or correct anything that's wrong. Email privacy@happyhourhq.co with the subject "Privacy request" and we'll respond within 14 days.
If you're a manager and want to leave the platform, email us — we'll soft-delete your account and anonymize PII while preserving aggregate financial records as tax law requires.
Children
The site is intended for users 21+ (drinking age in the US). We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 21. If you believe a minor has created an account, email us and we'll remove it.
Changes
We may update this policy occasionally. Material changes will be announced via a banner on the site for at least 30 days. The latest version always lives at this URL.
